EV Charger Installation for Your Home: What You Need to Know

You bought an electric vehicle. Now you're charging it on the 120V outlet in your garage and watching it crawl to 80% overnight. A Level 2 charger changes that — full charge in a few hours instead of all night.

Here's what's involved in getting one installed.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 — What's the Difference?

**Level 1** is the cord that came with your car. It plugs into a standard 120V household outlet. It adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour. Fine if you drive 30 miles a day and have 12 hours to charge. Not fine for anything more.

**Level 2** runs on a 240V circuit — the same voltage as your dryer or oven. It adds 25-40 miles of range per hour depending on the charger and your car. For most people, that means plugging in when you get home and waking up to a full battery.

Level 2 is what most homeowners install, and it's what we recommend.

Hardwired vs. Plug-In

**Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet):** The electrician installs a 240V outlet — usually a NEMA 14-50, the same type used for electric ranges. You plug the charger into it. If you move, you unplug the charger and take it with you. Simple.

**Hardwired:** The charger is wired directly into a dedicated circuit. No plug, no outlet. Slightly cleaner installation, but the charger stays with the house.

Either works. Plug-in is more flexible. Some chargers only come in one configuration. Your electrician can advise based on the unit you choose.

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

Maybe. A Level 2 charger draws 30-50 amps on a dedicated circuit. If your panel is already near capacity, there's no room for it.

This is most common in:

- Older homes with 100-amp service

- Homes that already have electric ranges, dryers, heat pumps, and hot water heaters on the same panel

- Homes with no open breaker slots

An electrician checks this during the site assessment. If you need a panel upgrade, it adds to the cost and timeline — but you'll know before any work starts.

Worth knowing: **Washington state now requires all new single-family homes to have at least one EV-Ready parking space** — a pre-wired 40A 208/240V circuit to the garage. If your home was built recently, the circuit may already be there. Check before you schedule an install.

What the Installation Looks Like

1. **Site visit.** Electrician looks at your panel, measures the distance to your charging location, checks for capacity.

2. **Quote.** You get a specific number — not a range — for your situation.

3. **Permit.** Electrician pulls the electrical permit (through your city or WA State L&I depending on where you live).

4. **Install.** New breaker in the panel, wire run to the charging location, outlet or hardwired connection, charger mounting. Usually half a day to a full day.

5. **Inspection.** State or city inspector verifies the work meets code.

What It Costs

Typical residential EV charger installation:

- **Short run (panel in garage, charger on same wall):** $500–$1,000

- **Medium run (panel in garage, charger on opposite wall or exterior):** $1,000–$1,800

- **Long run (panel in basement or far side of house, detached garage):** $1,500–$2,500

- **Panel upgrade needed:** Add $1,500–$3,000

The charger unit itself runs $400–$900 for most residential Level 2 units, depending on brand and features.
