Space Heater Keeps Tripping the Breaker? What Aberdeen and Hoquiam Homeowners Should Know

The heater comes on. The lights go out.

A space heater pulls a lot of power — often most of what a standard household circuit can carry. If that circuit is also feeding the bedroom outlets, the hallway lights, or the TV, the heater can push it over the edge. The breaker trips. That's it doing its job.

This is why it shows up in fall and not July. The circuit was always near its limit. The heater just made it obvious.

A few rules that matter, straight from the CPSC: plug the heater directly into the wall. No power strip, no extension cord — they overheat. Keep three feet of clearance from anything that burns: curtains, bedding, furniture. Turn it off when you leave the room and when you sleep. And follow the instructions that came with your heater.

What doesn't work: a bigger breaker. Breakers are sized to protect the wire in the wall, not to match whatever you plug in. Putting a larger breaker on the same wire lets the wire overheat before anything trips. Never upsize a breaker to stop nuisance trips.

Call it a problem when the breaker trips repeatedly, the outlet or plug feels hot, you see scorch marks, or you smell something hot. Stop using the heater on that circuit. If there's smoke or flame, that's 911, not an electrician.

What we do about it: we find out what's on the circuit and what the circuit can actually carry. Sometimes the answer is moving the heater to a circuit with more headroom. Sometimes it's a dedicated circuit for the heater. Sometimes the panel is due for an upgrade — but not every tripping breaker means a new panel. The assessment decides.

Can you run a space heater on a power strip? No. The CPSC is clear on this one: direct wall outlet only.
